From midday onwards!
An end-of-spring-start-of-summer Bar-B-Q at Allen and Farhana Rahmans' country home, Villa Maple Woods, just over an hour's easy drive away from Rome at Colle Rosso in the Valle del Salto, Abruzzo. You can see pictures of the beautifully appointed villa and garden here while the surrounding area can be explored here.
In the past, Rachel, a native Scot, and Allen, a Canadian of north-east Indian origin, have combined their talents, Rachel as a Scotch whisky connoisseur, Allen as a talented Indian chef, to provide some interesting and appetizing events at which some of you have been present. Single malt Scotch whisky will not predominate as the drink of choice at the Bar-B-Q although a selection of malts will be available along with nosing and drinking tips for those who just can't resist the temptation! Allen and Farhana's 'on the house' wine - a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo will be served, as will beer and soft drinks.
But this is a Bar-B-Q and food is king! So, to whet your appetite, here is the menu!
Les Amuze Gueules:
Local fior di latte cheese with pickled 'boroi,' a berry from south Asia.
Three Trempettes: Kashondi - mashed mustard seeds with mustard oil. Caramelized onions - garlic and leek. Onion, fresh coriander, hint of garlic, hint of chopped green chillies for the icy feel.
Bhel Puri - roasted and toasted savoury tit-bits made of lentils, puffed rice and rice flour, slightly spiced, served with tamarind sauce.
Main Courses: Lamb from the Altopiano di Rascino (Lazio/Abruzzo) marinated in ginger, garlic, onions, cooked in a 300 year old oak wood burning oven. Chicken barbecued on a charcoal fire à la Tandoori Bokhara, marinated in yogurt, ginger, onions, paprika/red chillies, lemon juice, nutmeg, black pepper, mace, garlic and cinnamon.
Side dishes: Three types of rice dish: Sabzi (vegetable) pilaf. Akhni pilaf with bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom. Taj (crown) pilaf with sultanas and nuts.
Aloo (potato) bharta with onions, mustard and fresh coriander. Vegetables à la Plassey cooked with 5 spices (Panch Phoran). Raita - yoghurt and cucumber flavoured with mint and black pepper.
Desserts: Kheer - 'Biron' rice cooked in milk, thickened to creamy brown and sweetened with palm molasses. Gajar Halwa - Carrot cake topped with real silver leaf, thickened milk and pistachio. Fresh fruits.
Masala Tea: Spicy sweet tea served with homemade cookies.
The cost of this event is €65 per person (€55 for Canadian Club of Rome members). Reservation is essential and should be made through this website on or before Wednesday May 26. Payment instructions and detailed directions to Villa Maple Woods will be sent individually on receipt of bookings. This will be a great opportunity for a get-together before we all go our separate summer ways. Please book as soon as you can so that Rachel and Allen know how many lambs and chickens are required - not to mention bottles of whisky, wine and beer!
